Common Polynosic and Modal Fabrics
Modal.
Recommended Uses
Linings, shirts/Blouses, skirts/pants/shorts, dresses, children's wear, knitwear, curtains and
household linen, fibre filling, medical dressings.
Properties
Modal is a strong fibre and only loses 20% of its strength when it's wet, not distorting and
tearing easily like wet viscose rayon. It can absorb up to 15% of its weight in moisture
before feeling wet, and will dry more quickly than viscose rayon.
Polynosic rayon/modal rayon has a medium handle (texture or feel), and is slightly crispier
than viscose rayon. Modal can have a ‘crystal' look, and is not very elastic; wrinkling easily
(a treatment can be added during manufacture to reduce wrinkling). The drape is similar to
viscose rayon.
Manufacturing processes can produce Polynosic rayon/modal rayon to have the same
handle (texture, or feel) as cotton.
Care
Use a mild laundry powder, separate whites from colours, and wash in cold to medium heat
water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, but do not wring.
To dry viscose rayon, you can: dry it flat in the shade, line dry, or put it in the dryer.
Iron with a medium to hot iron when damp, or use steam. Over-steaming will turn white
fabric yellow, or dull your colours (very hot water also does this).
Avoid bleaching viscose rayon. If the colour fades, it is because of the dye used and/or
laundering.
Storing viscose rayon in warm, humid conditions attracts mildew, but this can be removed
by laundering.
